Smoke in Moscow

In summer 2010, around late June—mid August, peat bogs around Moscow were on fire from the heat and dryness of that summer. For weeks, smoke from the fires filled the streets of Moscow.

To escape the disaster, many muscovites chose to leave the city. Those who stayed had to wear masks, although that offered little protection.

Videographer Vitaly Mendeleev was out in the streets to capture the beauty of Moscow in smoke.

Not much is known about Max Bears, except for his obsession with the Russian language and Apple products. Sometimes seen on a bicycle around downtown Moscow, he is indistinguishable from the wild bears that roam the streets of Russia's capital.
